Electric Planes Could Become a Reality Soon But Climate Impact Will Take Time

Electric planes could become a reality within a few years, but their impact on the climate will take time, according to Copenhagen Airport Director Christian Poulsen. Poulsen believes these planes can eventually contribute to the aviation industry’s green transition.

Copenhagen Airport recently hosted a demonstration of an electric plane. Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen and aviation enthusiasts were present to view the aircraft, which is en route to Norway for cargo test flights. A passenger version exists, accommodating five passengers and a pilot.

Currently, the electric plane’s small size poses an economic challenge. With a wingspan of 15 meters and a top speed of 283 kilometers per hour, it lacks the capacity to be economically sustainable for airlines and airports. Poulsen suggests that an electric plane with a capacity of 60 or more passengers would be more viable, and he anticipates such a plane will be available before 2030.

The demonstrated plane, with a range of approximately 400 kilometers per charge, is best suited for domestic travel, according to Poulsen. He highlights the potential for electric planes on shorter routes within Denmark and Scandinavia. He anticipates that future models will have increased ranges of 500-600 kilometers.

Furthermore, electric planes are expected to be cost-effective to operate. Poulsen draws a comparison to electric cars, noting the initial investment is offset by lower refueling costs, which could provide significant operational advantages. The plane on display at Copenhagen Airport, manufactured by Beta Technologies, previously completed a 200-kilometer flight from Sønderborg.
