Eastern High Court Upholds Prison Sentence and Deportation in Fatal Drunk Driving Case

The Eastern High Court has upheld a six-year prison sentence and deportation order for a 23-year-old Romanian man, Andrei-Vlad Cojocariu, convicted of causing a fatal car accident while driving under the influence. The incident, which occurred in February 2024, resulted in the death of a 28-year-old woman.

Cojocariu, while heavily intoxicated, crashed his van into the victim’s car as she waited at a red light on Halland Boulevard in Høje Taastrup. The impact of the collision propelled the woman’s Toyota Aygo across the intersection, resulting in fatal injuries.

The woman, a mother to a one-year-old daughter, was reportedly visiting her parents prior to the accident. She had been traveling with her sister and cousin, who were in a separate vehicle and not involved in the collision.

Cojocariu’s blood alcohol content was measured at 2.18, significantly exceeding the legal limit of 0.5. The High Court also noted that Cojocariu had run a red light at a previous intersection moments before the fatal crash.

The defendant had pleaded not guilty to charges of manslaughter under particularly aggravating circumstances and particularly reckless driving, claiming a lack of memory of the incident. He had been celebrating his 22nd birthday before driving.

The High Court increased the district court’s sentence regarding the revocation of Cojocariu’s driving license, extending it to eight years instead of seven. The deportation order includes a lifelong ban from re-entering Denmark.
