DRTV to Clarify Optional Username Requirement for Login

Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) will modify the user login process for DRTV to prevent misunderstandings regarding the optional username field, according to a response to the Data Protection Agency (Datatilsynet). The adjustment comes after complaints about the mandatory login requirement for accessing on-demand content.

The core of the issue concerns the prompt “Tell us your name” during profile creation on DRTV, which DR acknowledges could be misinterpreted. To address this, the media organization will revise the text to explicitly state that the username is optional.

The Data Protection Agency has been actively investigating DR’s login requirements, following multiple complaints from users. These complaints arose because access to DRTV content, excluding live channels, necessitates creating an account with an email address and username.

In its communication with the Data Protection Agency, DR has emphasized that users are free to select any name for their profile and are not obligated to provide their real name. This chosen name is solely for addressing users within the DRTV platform.

The Data Protection Agency has repeatedly requested DR to explore the feasibility of allowing viewers to access content on DRTV without logging in. The agency has asked DR to elaborate on the reasons behind the login requirement if a no-login solution cannot be implemented.
