DR’s new series “Mom’s Girl” portrays complex mother-daughter relationships

DR’s new four-part series, “Mom’s Girl,” explores the intricate dynamics between mothers and daughters, highlighting both the challenges and the deep love that exists between them. The series, which premiered on July 8th on DRTV, follows four women between the ages of 19 and 27 and their mothers, showcasing how the mothers’ personalities and upbringing styles have profoundly influenced their daughters.

While the series aims to present a nuanced portrayal of these relationships, it has received mixed reviews, with some critics finding it somewhat unfocused and overly reliant on the participants’ social media presence.

Despite these criticisms, the series shines when it focuses on the relationships of Aida Tepe Mattsson with her mother Ayşe Dudu Tepe, and Anne “Lille” Skarby with her mother Mona. These pairings offer compelling contrasts, illustrating the diverse ways in which mother-daughter bonds can manifest.

Anne Skarby’s story is particularly poignant, as she grapples with anxiety stemming from the tragic loss of her older brother when she was an infant. Her mother, Mona, is portrayed as overly anxious and constantly needing to know Anne’s whereabouts, a consequence of the trauma she experienced. In a touching moment, Anne expresses admiration for her mother’s strength in remaining a good parent despite the devastating loss.

Aida Tepe Mattsson and her mother, Ayşe Dudu Tepe, present a different dynamic. Ayşe, a self-described “cool teenager,” often prioritizes being Aida’s friend over being her mother. Their relationship is characterized by constant arguments and a struggle for Aida to assert her independence.

The series delves into the complexities of modern motherhood and the pressures of emotional perfectionism. It suggests that mothers are often unfairly blamed for their children’s problems, while also acknowledging the profound and universal love that mothers have for their daughters.
