Doctor Illegally Accessed Patient Records of Thousands in Denmark

A doctor in Denmark illegally accessed the patient records of approximately 4,750 citizens in the Capital Region and Region Zealand. The breach was discovered after a review of the doctor’s activities.

The review in Region Zealand uncovered an additional 247 cases, bringing the total number of affected individuals to approximately 4,750. Previously, it was known that the doctor had accessed around 4,500 records.

All affected citizens have been notified of the unauthorized access to their data. In the Capital Region, 1,800 individuals were informed, while in Region Zealand, approximately 2,950 people were notified.

The doctor primarily accessed information such as names, addresses, contact details, and social security numbers. In some instances, the doctor also viewed citizens’ health information.

In Region Zealand, the health information of 175 individuals was accessed, while in the Capital Region, this number is less than five.

The regions have reported the doctor to the police, and the case is now under investigation. Authorities noted that in some cases, the doctor accessed the same citizen’s records multiple times.

Mette Harbo, director of the Center for IT and Medical Technology in the Capital Region of Denmark, stated that the repeated access to some records indicates a “different pattern and different interest,” prompting the immediate handover of the case to the police.
