Danish residents can now opt out of receiving a physical plastic health insurance card and instead use a digital version on their mobile phones. This option is available through the health insurance card app, according to the Agency for Digitalisation.
The option to forgo the physical card can be selected when ordering a health insurance card in the app or on borger.dk. This choice is limited to individuals over 15 years of age.
The digital alternative is expected to conserve resources, given that the regions issued 1.8 million physical cards last year due to citizens’ name changes, relocations, or doctor changes. The health insurance card app also allows parents to access their children’s health insurance cards.
To utilize the app, users must reside in Denmark, be in security group 1 or 2, and have MitID. Launched in 2021, the health insurance card app currently has 2.8 million users. This move follows the introduction of a digital driver’s license app in 2020, allowing drivers to present their license digitally within Denmark.
