Denmark’s Official Apology for the Spiral Case in Greenland to be Marked with Event

An event marking Denmark’s official apology for the spiral case will be held on September 24 in Nuuk, Greenland. The event will feature the participation of Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland’s Head of Government, Jens-Frederik Nielsen.

The ceremony will take place at the Katuaq Culture Centre in Nuuk. It will be broadcast live in both Danish and Greenlandic via KNR.

Prime Minister Frederiksen issued an apology on August 27 to Greenlandic women and young girls who experienced systematic discrimination related to the spiral case. This case involved the insertion of contraceptive coils into approximately 4,500 Greenlandic women and young girls, sometimes without their knowledge, during the 1960s and 1970s.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the pain and anger the spiral case caused and recognized its impact on the relationship between Denmark and Greenland. She also extended her apology to include other instances where Greenlanders were treated unfairly by Denmark.

In 2023, a group of 143 women filed a lawsuit against Denmark, alleging human rights violations and seeking compensation totaling DKK 43 million for the involuntary insertion of coils.

Following the August apology, the Danish and Greenlandic governments announced plans for a joint event in Greenland to formally mark the occasion, contingent upon the completion of an independent assessment of the spiral case. The findings of this assessment are still pending release.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen also apologized on August 27 for cases that occurred after Greenland assumed responsibility for its healthcare system. He expressed his belief that an apology from Denmark was long overdue.
