Denmark’s Nuclear Waste Storage Facility faces further delays

The construction of a new nuclear waste storage facility in Risø, near Roskilde, Denmark, has been delayed again and is now not expected to be completed before 2030. Dansk Dekommissionering, the organization responsible for radioactive waste storage, confirmed the delay, pushing back the previously anticipated 2029 completion date.

The project, initially slated for completion in 2023, has been subject to repeated postponements. The director of radiation protection at Dansk Dekommissionering, Mikkel Øberg, attributed the delay to the extensive nature of the work and the involvement of numerous authorities.

According to Øberg, the concretization of the project has revealed issues requiring further discussion within the decision-making process. The decision to upgrade the storage facilities at Risø was made in 2018 to safeguard nuclear waste against environmental threats like storm surges and the effects of climate change.
