Denmark’s Historic Victory Over Canada at the 2022 World Championships

Denmark hopes to repeat its stunning 3-2 victory over Canada from the 2022 World Championships as they face off in the quarter-finals this Thursday. The Danish players are drawing inspiration from that historic win, their only one against Canada to date, to fuel their belief that they can triumph again.

Morten Poulsen emphasized the team’s faith and approach during that game, noting that many players from that match are returning. “We really played our chance that day,” Poulsen said, recalling the intense effort that left players exhausted.

The 2022 game saw Denmark take an early lead with goals from Markus Lauridsen and Peter Regin, the latter scored while shorthanded. Despite a Canadian goal early in the second period, Denmark’s strong defense and stellar goaltending by Sebastian Dahm kept Canada at bay.

In the third period, Mathias Bau extended Denmark’s lead with a power-play goal. Although Canada scored again, Denmark held on for the surprising victory, even with Oliver Lauridsen sidelined due to injury.

Oliver Lauridsen, who watched the game from the stands, remembers the intensity of the match. However, the victory was followed by a crushing 7-1 defeat against Slovakia, preventing Denmark from advancing to the quarter-finals despite earning 12 points in the tournament. Poulsen acknowledged that the team may have invested too much in the Canada game, leading to their subsequent loss.
