Denmark to launch world’s first supercomputer based on logical qubits

Denmark is poised to become a global leader in quantum computing with the launch of Magne, the world’s first supercomputer based on logical qubits, expected to be operational next year. This groundbreaking project is spearheaded by QuNorth, a newly established company backed by a substantial 600 million kroner investment from the Danish Export and Investment Fund (Eifo) and the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

The development of Magne represents a significant leap forward in quantum technology. Unlike traditional computers that use bits, which can represent either 0 or 1, quantum computers utilize qubits, which can exist in a superposition of both states simultaneously. This allows quantum computers to perform calculations far beyond the capabilities of even the most powerful conventional supercomputers.

Magne’s unique architecture, based on logical qubits, is particularly noteworthy because it addresses a key challenge in quantum computing: error correction. Logical qubits are created by encoding quantum information across multiple physical qubits, making them more resilient to noise and errors that can disrupt calculations.

QuNorth plans to make Magne commercially available to researchers and companies seeking to harness its unparalleled computing power. This will enable advancements in various fields, from developing new pharmaceuticals and materials to optimizing complex logistical systems and accelerating scientific discovery.
