Denmark plans to invite three to five Ukrainian weapons companies to begin production within the country within the next six months. This initiative, spearheaded by Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen, aims to bolster both Danish and Ukrainian defense capabilities.
Poulsen envisions establishing some of the new Ukrainian weapons factories in Odense, the same city that became home to Denmark’s new drone center in March. He stresses the importance of ambition, advocating for multiple companies to ensure a robust defense industry.
The invitation is part of an agreement between Poulsen and his Ukrainian counterpart, Rustem Umerov, finalized in late June. The agreement anticipates potential benefits for Danish defense, such as Ukrainian companies producing drones for Danish forces.
For this collaboration to materialize, Ukraine needs to enact legislation enabling production in other countries, while Denmark also needs to adjust its regulations. Poulsen has presented a bill granting defense ministers significant authority to bypass existing Danish laws.
Addressing concerns about potential corruption, Poulsen acknowledged Ukraine’s historical challenges in this area. He stated that the Danish government is aware of the risks and is committed to monitoring all products ordered from Ukrainian companies to guarantee they reach the front lines. The government will demand stringent security measures for Ukrainian weapons production in Denmark, addressing issues such as corruption and adherence to Danish labor laws.
