Denmark to Assume EU Presidency with Focus on Security and Support for Ukraine

Denmark is set to assume the EU presidency on July 1st, with a strong emphasis on bolstering security and increasing support for Ukraine. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen highlighted this as a top priority, aligning with the views of European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and a significant portion of Danish voters.

Mette Frederiksen stressed the importance of creating a strong and safe EU, with continued support for Ukraine being a crucial element. Roberta Metsola expressed confidence in Denmark’s ability to lead this agenda, praising the country’s pragmatic and consensus-oriented approach.

A recent survey indicates that almost 60% of Danes believe security should be the primary focus of the Danish presidency, sharing the top spot with reducing dependence on Russian gas. This reflects a broader desire within the EU to strengthen its defense capabilities and reduce reliance on external sources.

Lars Sandahl Sørensen, CEO of Dansk Industri, advocated for streamlining the European defense industry through joint purchases and addressing challenges related to export licenses and certification. He emphasized the importance of integrating the Ukrainian defense industry into the European framework, citing the innovation and frontline experience Ukraine brings.

This will be the eighth time Denmark has held the EU presidency, placing Danish ministers at the forefront of negotiations and legislative processes within the Union. The focus on security and support for Ukraine underscores the critical challenges and priorities facing the EU in the coming months.
