Denmark Should Apologize to Greenlandic Women for Forced IUD Insertions

Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has apologized to Greenlandic women who were subjected to forced IUD insertions during the 1960s and 70s. The apology addresses the birth control practices implemented by authorities during that time.

The apology follows years of growing frustration and calls for recognition of the human rights violations experienced by the women. Karsten Hønge, a Greenland spokesman, emphasized the importance of the apology as a demonstration of empathy and understanding.

In 2024, 143 women filed a lawsuit against Denmark, alleging human rights violations and seeking financial compensation. The previous year, Denmark and Greenland agreed to conduct an impartial investigation into the matter, with the results expected soon.

While the Danish Prime Minister apologized on behalf of Denmark, the Greenlandic government also issued an apology for the continuation of the practice after the health sector was repatriated in 1992. Rasmus Jarlov, another Greenland spokesman, expressed his relief that the apology was finally given.

However, there are varying perspectives on the timing and scope of the apology. Alex Ahrendtsen criticized the Prime Minister for issuing an apology before the investigation results are released, questioning the rationality of doing so. Jarlov cautioned against exaggerating the situation, specifically refuting claims of “genocide” made by Múte B. Egede, the current Minister of Finance. The investigation’s findings are anticipated next week, but some questions remain unanswered, including the reason for IUD insertions in young girls as young as 13 years old.
