Denmark is projected to experience a considerable rise in its elderly population in the coming decades. According to Statistics Denmark, the proportion of individuals aged 80 and above is set to increase substantially.
Currently, this demographic constitutes 5.7 percent of the total population. However, projections indicate a significant shift within the next 14 years.
By 2039, it is estimated that 8 percent of the Danish population will be 80 years or older. This represents a notable increase in the number of elderly citizens.
Looking further ahead, the trend is expected to continue, with approximately 650,000 people, or 10.3 percent of the population, reaching the age of 80 or more by 2070. These figures are based on Statistics Denmark’s population projections.
The projections are formulated on assumptions regarding future trends in immigration, emigration, mortality, and fertility rates. These assumptions are based on recent years’ developments and are subject to inherent uncertainties. Therefore, the projections provide an estimated trajectory and may not precisely reflect the actual future population distribution.
