Denmark’s women’s national team is focusing on the positive aspects of their 0-1 loss to Sweden in their opening match of the European Championship, particularly the defensive improvements made since their previous 1-6 defeat against the same opponent. The team believes this progress gives them a foundation to build upon as they prepare for their crucial match against Germany on Tuesday.
Despite the disappointing result, defender Stine Ballisager highlighted the team’s ability to withstand Sweden’s offensive pressure, noting that they also created several scoring opportunities themselves. She expressed disappointment but remained encouraged by the overall performance.
Janni Thomsen, who transitioned from wing-back to the offensive line, emphasized the team’s improved mental resilience after conceding a goal. She pointed to their immediate reaction after Filippa Angeldal’s goal, noting that they responded quickly and earned a corner kick soon after. Thomsen believes this demonstrates a significant shift in the team’s mental state compared to their previous encounter with Sweden.
Thomsen acknowledged that Sweden performed better in critical areas, but she emphasized that Denmark executed many things well and created numerous good chances. She expressed frustration with the narrow margin of defeat, feeling that they were close to achieving a positive result.
In the group’s other match, Germany defeated Poland 2-0. A loss against Germany, combined with a Swedish victory over Poland on Tuesday, would eliminate Denmark from advancing beyond the group stage, regardless of their result against Poland in the final group match.
