Denmark Seeks to Erect Statues of Historically Significant Women

The Danish government is encouraging citizens to propose women from Danish history to be honored with statues in public spaces. This initiative aims to address the significant underrepresentation of women among the existing statues and busts throughout Denmark.

The Minister for Culture, Jakob Engel-Schmidt, emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of skilled women who have shaped Danish history. He highlighted the current imbalance, noting that in Copenhagen, there are more statues of mythical creatures than of women.

The public can submit their suggestions via borgerbidrag.dk. These submissions will be incorporated into a report by a committee focusing on overlooked women who deserve recognition in public spaces.

While the initiative is not guaranteed to lead to more equality, Minister Engel-Schmidt believes it is a step in the right direction. He stressed the importance of honoring individuals who have shaped Danish history and ensuring that public spaces reflect this history accurately.

Municipalities will play a vital role in the project’s success, as the outcome largely depends on how the mapping results are received locally. A previous survey conducted in 2023 indicated that only 31 out of 321 statues and busts in urban areas depict women.

The Danish Arts Foundation will ultimately decide which women will be immortalized in bronze. The project’s funding and the full results of the national mapping of existing statues are yet to be disclosed. Many of the existing statues in public spaces were erected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
