Denmark Seeks More Young Blood Donors Through TikTok and Other Initiatives

Blood Donors Denmark is actively seeking 33,000 new blood donors to ensure a stable blood supply for patients in need. The organization currently relies on 180,000 regular donors.

A key focus is attracting younger donors, as they are currently underrepresented. Last year saw a slight decrease in registrations from individuals aged 17 to 25.

To address this, Blood Donors Denmark is employing new strategies, including partnering with young TikTok users. These TikTokers will receive behind-the-scenes access at Rigshospitalet to witness the blood treatment process firsthand. The goal is for them to share their experiences and encourage more young people to donate.

“TikTok is just one element, but we also go out on other digital channels, and we have launched a new podcast about the history of blood,” says director Lisbet Schønau. “These are all examples of how we are taking more steps to be more present in young people’s minds.”

A survey indicates that 16 percent of 18- to 34-year-olds are highly motivated to donate blood, but many face obstacles.

Common barriers include fear of needles (24 percent) and anxiety about feeling unwell afterward (26 percent). Schønau acknowledges that feeling unwell after donating is possible, but it is rare. “Most people leave the blood bank feeling really good because they have helped a person they don’t know and have a good feeling of having contributed in that way,” she says.

Individuals aged 17 to 75 are eligible to donate blood, plasma, or both. Plasma, the liquid component of blood, is crucial for creating essential medicines, particularly for individuals with compromised immune systems.
