Denmark Requests Parliamentary Adjustments During EU Presidency

Denmark is seeking temporary adjustments to parliamentary procedures during its upcoming EU presidency, which begins on July 1st and lasts for six months.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has requested the changes in a letter to the Speaker of the Parliament, citing the “large and time-consuming task” ahead. The Prime Minister is asking for fewer consultations and the avoidance of urgent inquiries, with ministers answering questions in writing as much as possible.

The letter also seeks “understanding for the need for flexibility in calendar planning” regarding legislative and policy proposals. Frederiksen referenced a 2023 European policy agreement where parties agreed to “engage in constructive cooperation” on the EU presidency, including parliamentary organization.

However, the request has drawn criticism from parties outside the original agreement, including the Danish People’s Party, the Denmark Democrats, the Red-Green Alliance, and The Alternative.

Critics argue that the government is attempting to sideline Parliament. Peter Kofod, group chairman for the Danish People’s Party, called it “pure power arrogance.” Peter Skaarup of the Denmark Democrats stated that Parliament should not shut down during the EU presidency, and Peder Hvelplund (EL) expressed concern, emphasizing Parliament’s fundamental role in controlling the government.

Frederiksen noted that similar adjustments were agreed upon during Denmark’s EU presidency in 2002. The Parliament’s Committee on Rules of Procedure will discuss the government’s requests at a meeting on June 11.
