Denmark Proposes Law to Allow Shooting Down Threatening Drones

Denmark is considering a new law that would allow authorities to shoot down drones deemed a threat. Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen introduced the bill in response to growing concerns about drone usage in sensitive areas and potential security risks.

The proposed legislation aims to grant specific public authorities and infrastructure managers the power to neutralize non-cooperative drones within designated geographical zones. This measure comes amid rising incidents of drones disrupting air traffic and operating near critical infrastructure.

The Danish Transport Authority reported a significant increase in registered incidents last year involving drones flying too high or too close to airports. These incidents highlight the need for enhanced measures to ensure airspace safety and prevent potential disruptions.

One specific incident involved repeated reports of drones flying near Køge Marina in January, with the responsible parties remaining unidentified.

In 2023, North Jutland Police had to close the airspace over Aalborg Airport multiple times due to illegal drone activity, further emphasizing the escalating problem. The new bill seeks to address these challenges by providing a legal framework for authorities to take decisive action against threatening drones.
