Denmark Proposes Increased Security Measures for Children in the Digital World

The Danish government is proposing a 160 million kroner allocation to enhance the safety of children and young people online. This initiative aims to address concerns about the digital environment and its impact on youth.

The proposal, which will be part of the upcoming budget negotiations, seeks to implement a national age limit of 15 years old for social media use. The Social Democrats are championing this measure, arguing that it is necessary to protect children from the potential harms of social media platforms.

The Social Democrats’ digitalization spokesperson, Birgitte Vind, stated that social media has become a “wild west” where children are constantly exposed to addictive algorithms, concealed advertising, and unsuitable content. She emphasized the urgency of intervention to address these issues.

In addition to the age limit, the allocated funds are intended to improve the oversight of social media platforms. The proposal also includes developing clearer guidelines and recommendations for parents to help them navigate the digital landscape and protect their children.
