Denmark Introduces Cancer Plan 5 with Focus on Prevention and Support

The Danish government has launched Cancer Plan 5, allocating DKK 600 million annually from 2025 to enhance cancer prevention and treatment. The plan includes 36 initiatives, with a strong emphasis on supporting patients through demanding treatment courses and addressing long-term consequences.

A key component of the plan is a trial scheme using mobile cooling caps to help breast cancer patients avoid hair loss during treatment. The initiative aims to explore the practical application of cooling caps in cancer departments, as they can slow blood circulation in the scalp, reducing the impact of treatment on hair follicles.

The plan also focuses on preventative measures, including a ban on tanning beds for individuals under 18. This initiative responds to concerns about the harmful effects of tanning beds, particularly for young people.

Furthermore, the government aims to restrict advertising for unhealthy food and drinks, such as chips and soda, targeting children and young people under 15. This measure is intended to promote healthier habits early in life, reducing the risk of developing cancer associated with being overweight.

According to Minister for the Interior and Health Sophie Løhde, around 400,000 people in Denmark are currently living with or have survived cancer. The plan seeks to build on advancements in cancer survival rates, addressing the fact that cancer remains the leading cause of death in Denmark.

Danish Regions welcomes Cancer Plan 5, acknowledging the healthcare system’s progress in improving cancer survival rates through faster courses and better treatment. The chairman of Danish Regions, Anders Kühnau (S), emphasized the importance of focusing on helping patients manage the consequences of cancer treatment. While the cancer plan itself is not subject to negotiation, initiatives requiring legal changes, such as the age limit for tanning bed use, will involve the Danish Parliament. The government also intends to limit the number of places that sell tobacco and nicotine products.
