Denmark Disagrees with Calls to Abolish EU Sustainability Directive

Denmark’s Minister for Economic Affairs, Morten Bødskov, has stated that Denmark opposes abolishing the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), despite calls from other European leaders to scrap the regulation. Bødskov emphasized the importance of maintaining the goals set for the green transition while acknowledging the need to improve the flexibility and manageability of regulations for companies.

The CSDDD aims to strengthen sustainability by placing greater responsibility on companies for their global supply chains, requiring them to address and prevent negative impacts on both people and the environment resulting from their operations.

While Bødskov agrees that EU regulations for companies need streamlining, he insists that this should not weaken the overarching goals for a green and socially responsible Europe.

Liberal Alliance MEP Henrik Dahl sharply criticized the government’s stance, labeling it “directly irresponsible” and claiming the CSDDD is destructive to Europe’s business community. He accused the government of double standards, pointing out their repeated emphasis on debureaucratizing EU regulations.

Conversely, SF MEP Kira Marie Peter-Hansen voiced strong support for the Danish government’s position, calling it “really positive”. She asserted that adhering to the legislation is crucial to ensure goods are produced under environmentally and ethically sound conditions.

French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have previously advocated for abolishing the CSDDD, citing concerns that it is too cumbersome and bureaucratic for businesses. These calls align with the EU Commission’s proposed omnibus simplification packages designed to ease the bureaucratic burdens on European companies.
