Denmark secured a stunning 2-1 victory over Canada in the World Championship quarter-final, thanks to a late winning goal by Nick Olesen. The match, held in Herning, saw Denmark advance to the semi-finals against Switzerland in Stockholm.
With just moments remaining in the game, Olesen scored the decisive goal, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. This followed an equalizer by Nikolaj Ehlers just a minute earlier, setting the stage for Olesen’s dramatic winner. Nicklas Jensen assisted on the play, finding Olesen in front of the Canadian net.
“It’s hard to put into words,” Olesen said. “It’s not so much about my goal, it’s about all of us fighting our asses off for all 60 minutes. We beat Canada, and that’s the biggest thing in my career.“
The victory was celebrated wildly by the Danish team and their fans. “To be able to celebrate something like that with the boys in the locker room is an amazing feeling. We have fought together for two weeks, and I don’t think any of us had dreamed of being here today,” Olesen added.
Olesen also praised the home crowd, saying, “The fans in Boxen have been fantastic throughout the tournament. The Danish fans are something special. To hear the roar that went through the hall when I scored. I can only repeat that it is probably the biggest thing I have experienced in my ice hockey career.”
The Danish team will now travel to Stockholm for the semi-finals, where they will face Switzerland.
