Defence Recommends Redirecting Art Funds to Soldier Welfare

The Defence Command is advocating for the reallocation of approximately 139 million kroner saved from artistic decoration at military facilities towards improving soldiers’ well-being. These funds, previously earmarked for art in barracks, air stations, and other state buildings, could now be used for sports facilities and other amenities at service locations.

This recommendation comes after the defence sector was exempted from the state’s art circular as part of the Defence Agreement for 2024-2033. The art circular mandated that 1.5 percent of the Armed Forces’ craft expenses be spent on art decoration.

Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen stated that the funds saved will be used for initiatives that directly benefit soldiers in their daily lives. He acknowledged criticism from soldiers who expressed a preference for improved facilities over art.

The Minister emphasized the importance of local improvements to soldiers’ living conditions. According to Lund Poulsen, this model allows for addressing these concerns and enhancing the overall environment for military personnel.
