Debate Erupts Over Muslim Participation in Danish Student Celebrations

A controversy has ignited on social media regarding whether Muslim students in Denmark should participate in the traditional “student carriage” ride following high school graduation. The debate centers around concerns that the celebrations, which often involve alcohol and mixed-gender interactions, conflict with Islamic principles.

The discussion gained traction after posts surfaced online discouraging Muslim students from joining the celebrations. Khalid Abu Aisha, a TikTok influencer, reportedly criticized parents who allow their children to participate, arguing that it harms the Muslim community. A similar message was allegedly shared within a private Facebook group with a large Muslim membership.

The Facebook group “Quran og Sunnah – Vejen til Imam” explicitly advised against the student carriage ride, citing concerns about alcohol consumption and uncontrolled festivities. The group stated that participation is not permissible simply because it is a Danish custom.

The controversy has drawn attention from members of the Danish Parliament. Frederik Vad, the Social Democratic immigration spokesperson, questioned the motives of those attempting to isolate young Danes with Muslim backgrounds from their classmates. He acknowledged the right to limit alcohol consumption but criticized what he sees as social control blindly linked to religious doctrine.

Minister for Immigration and Integration Mohammad Rona condemned the statements discouraging participation as detrimental to integration and community. He emphasized that these voices do not represent all Danish Muslims and defended the tradition, while also respecting individual choices regarding alcohol consumption.

A representative from the Islamic group “Dawa Dk” stated that highlighting the impermissibility of alcohol and partying in Islam is not problematic. The debate continues to unfold online, raising questions about cultural integration and the balance between religious beliefs and Danish traditions.
