Users of Facebook and Instagram face a rapidly approaching deadline of May 26th to prevent Meta from using their images to train artificial intelligence (AI). This applies to both past and future publicly available posts.

Meta’s initiative has drawn criticism from numerous European consumer councils and supervisory authorities. The Norwegian Consumer Council, along with other European counterparts, has formally objected to Meta’s AI training plans.

The Danish Consumer Council Tænk has also voiced its disapproval and is urging users to actively opt-out.

This is not Meta’s first attempt to utilize user data for AI training. The company previously faced backlash when it announced similar plans last year. The ensuing criticism prompted the Irish Data Protection Commission to temporarily halt the rollout. However, Meta has now revived these plans.
