Danmission Launches Well-Being Survey for Children of Missionaries

Danmission has launched a well-being survey targeting adult children who accompanied their missionary parents abroad, aiming to understand their experiences and address potential issues. The survey, open until August 4th, seeks to give these individuals a voice regarding their time spent abroad.

Secretary General Julie Koch explained that the survey will examine both the positive skills gained and the challenges encountered by these children. The initiative will also explore instances of abuse, violations, or neglect that may have occurred.

The decision to launch the survey was partly influenced by experiences within the Norwegian Normisjon. Several years ago, reports emerged of sexual abuse experienced by children of Norwegian missionaries attending a Norwegian boarding school in Nepal. Koch noted that Danish children also attended this school, and Danmission is eager to hear their stories.

While the survey is particularly interested in the experiences of those who attended the school in Nepal, Danmission encourages anyone over 18 who lived abroad with missionary parents to participate.

Danmission, a folk church mission and aid organization formed in 2000 through the merger of The Danish Missionary Society and Danish Santal Mission, engages in both missionary work and development assistance. The organization’s activities are funded, in part, by proceeds from its recycling shops in Denmark.

Danmission conducted a similar well-being survey in 2009, but it received limited responses. The organization hopes this new effort will provide valuable insights into the lives of children who grew up in missionary families.
