Danish supercomputer to analyze women’s health data for new treatments

Researchers in Denmark are utilizing the Gefion supercomputer to analyze data related to women’s health issues, including menstrual cycles, infertility, and endometriosis, with the goal of improving understanding and treatment of these conditions. The collaboration, involving the Danish Centre for AI Innovation (DCAI), aims to address the historical underrepresentation of women’s health research due to the complexity of female biology.

David Westergaard, a lecturer at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and head of Data Science at Amager and Hvidovre Hospital’s Gynecological-Obstetric Department, emphasized the need for more resources to study the intricacies of women’s health. He noted that hormonal fluctuations, pregnancies, and menopause contribute to more complex data sets, which have historically deterred research efforts.

Gefion, one of the world’s most powerful supercomputers, allows researchers to analyze and integrate data in ways that were previously impossible. The supercomputer’s capabilities significantly reduce processing time, enabling complex models to run in minutes instead of days or weeks.

The researchers are currently focused on adenomyosis, a condition closely related to endometriosis. By analyzing ultrasound scans with artificial intelligence models, they aim to develop a tool for faster and more efficient diagnosis.

Initial tests on Gefion have shown promising results, reducing analysis times from months or years to just days or hours. The team hopes this technology will lead to improved diagnosis and treatment for women’s health issues.
