Danish Solar Power Concentrated in Five Jutland Municipalities

Five municipalities in Jutland, Denmark, produced approximately 27 percent of the country’s total solar electricity between April 2024 and April 2025. Aabenraa, Vejle, Viborg, Ringkøbing, and Holstebro led the nation in solar energy production.

These geographically large municipalities possess ample space for the development of extensive solar parks, which contributes significantly to their high production. Lolland, Faxe, Lemvig, and Randers followed closely behind the top five.

Energinet anticipates that May will set a new record for solar energy production, potentially reaching 657 gigawatt-hours, surpassing the previous record of 638 gigawatt-hours set in June 2023. The actual energy generated is highly dependent on the weather conditions for the remainder of the month.

The capacity for electricity production from solar panels in Denmark tripled between 2020 and 2023, largely due to the construction of large field facilities. The growth is also attributed to the increasing number of solar panels in urban municipalities, exemplified by the installation of the world’s largest roof-based solar panel system in Horsens, which increased the municipality’s installed solar panel capacity by 94 percent.

In 2024, solar panels supplied over nine percent of Denmark’s net electricity production, a rise from approximately six percent in 2022.
