Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has expressed serious concerns regarding alleged US influence operations in Greenland. According to reports, at least three Americans are suspected of carrying out these operations. Frederiksen emphasized that any interference in the internal affairs of Denmark and Greenland is unacceptable.
The Prime Minister highlighted the lack of a clear denial from the US regarding the allegations, which she views as a serious matter. She stated that the issue would be directly communicated to US counterparts.
The allegations involve individuals with ties to former US President Donald Trump, who have reportedly been attempting to infiltrate Greenland. Greenland has long been of interest to Trump as a potential future part of the United States. It remains unclear whether these individuals are acting independently.
In response to the reports, Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen summoned the American Chargé d’Affaires in Denmark to a meeting. Rasmussen stated that any official participation, sanctioning, or involvement in influence campaigns would be considered a violation of international rules.
The US currently does not have an ambassador in Denmark.
Frederiksen also discussed the matter with representatives of the US Senate, who were in Denmark for a pre-planned visit. She reiterated that such actions are unacceptable.
Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen plans to address the issue with the visiting senators as well. He intends to emphasize the close alliance between Denmark and the US and the expectation that the Kingdom of Denmark will be respected.
