Danish Parliament Members to Receive Salary Increase

Members of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget) are set to receive a salary increase, with annual salaries rising from approximately 870,000 kroner to 1.08 million kroner. The agreement encompasses a reduction in politicians’ pension schemes, capping them at approximately 18 percent of their salary.

The agreement has been reached by the government parties – Social Democrats, Venstre (Liberals), and Moderaterne (the Moderates) – as well as the Conservatives, Liberal Alliance, SF (Socialist People’s Party), Alternativet (the Alternative), and De Radikale (the Social Liberals).

Future severance pay will be reduced to a maximum of 12 months for ministers and members of the Folketinget. These changes will only apply after the next parliamentary election.

Enhedslisten (the Red-Green Alliance), Danmarksdemokraterne (the Denmark Democrats) and Dansk Folkeparti (the Danish People’s Party) are not part of the agreement. Pelle Dragsted, the political spokesperson for Enhedslisten, has voiced strong criticism of the salary increase.

In 2016, a Remuneration Commission proposed higher salaries and lower pensions for politicians.
