The Danish Parliament has approved the construction of the Marselis Tunnel, a nearly two-kilometer-long road tunnel under Marselis Boulevard in Aarhus. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity between Aarhus Harbour and the highway network.
The tunnel is intended to redirect heavy traffic, including approximately 3,000 trucks and semi-trailer trucks daily, away from the city center. This will provide a more direct route for freight transport and reduce traffic noise for residents.
Minister of Transport Thomas Danielsen stated that the Marselis Tunnel will ensure a fast and efficient connection between the port and the motorway network. It will also enable the residents of Aarhus to experience less traffic in the city and reclaim urban spaces.
The project was approved in 2021 as part of a larger infrastructure agreement allocating DKK 161 billion. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2028, with the tunnel expected to be operational by 2035.
