Mads Mensah, a prominent player on the Danish national handball team, will join Skjern Håndbold on a four-year contract next season. The West Jutland club made the announcement on Wednesday, confirming Mensah’s return to Danish handball after a decade in Germany.
The 33-year-old Mensah arrives at Skjern after spending the last five seasons with German club Flensburg-Handewitt. His contract with Flensburg-Handewitt was terminated a year early.
Mensah has been playing in Germany since 2014, initially with Rhein-Neckar Löwen before moving to Flensburg-Handewitt in 2020.
“I have big ambitions with the move to Skjern and will still do everything to continue to be considered for the Danish A-national team,” Mensah stated on Skjern’s website. “The competition is great on the national team, but I feel that I still have the level to be involved. I have heard a lot of good things about Skjern Håndbold from former players, and it has only confirmed to me that this is the right step for my family and me.”
Mensah will be taking the place of Noah Gaudin, who was recently sold to Paris Saint-Germain for a record fee.
Since his debut in 2011, Mensah has played in 213 games for the Danish national team. His accomplishments include an Olympic gold medal in Rio in 2016 and four World Championship titles, the most recent in January. He also has two Bundesliga titles with Rhein-Neckar Löwen and two Danish championships with Aalborg Håndbold (2012 and 2013). Skjern Håndbold finished with a silver medal last season.
