Danish Meteorological Institute Upgrades Downpour and Thunderstorm Risk Message

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has upgraded its risk message for local downpours and thunderstorms to a category 1 warning for most of Jutland, excluding Hjørring, Frederikshavn, and Sønderborg, effective from 1:55 PM to 9:00 PM on Thursday. This indicates an expectation of thunderstorms and local downpours in the specified regions.

The upgrade comes after DMI initially issued a risk message for local downpours and thunderstorms throughout Denmark, excluding Bornholm; this warning remains in effect for the rest of the country. The weather institute warns that between 15 and 25 millimeters of rain could fall within a 30-minute period.

According to DMI, a category 1 warning signifies “violent weather,” advising the public to be aware that “the weather development can affect your surroundings and outdoor activities.”

The conditions causing these weather patterns involve mild, humid air flowing into Denmark from the northeast and north, leading to the formation of rain and thunderstorms across large portions of the country. The slow movement of these showers, due to light winds, increases the potential for significant rainfall in localized areas.

This follows a period of intense rainfall earlier in the week, during which DMI issued a category 3 warning on Monday due to heavy rain, the first such warning since January 2000. South Zealand and Lolland-Falster were particularly affected, with Bjørup near Nykøbing Falster recording the highest rainfall at 165.6 millimeters between Monday and Wednesday morning.
