Danish Meteorological Institute Issues Warning for Local Cloudbursts and Thunderstorms

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) has issued a risk warning for local cloudbursts and thunderstorms across Denmark, excluding Bornholm. The warning, released early Thursday morning, is in effect from 11:00 to 21:00.

The DMI indicates that mild, humid air is moving into the country from the northeast and north, creating conditions favorable for rain and thunderstorms in many regions. Due to light winds, these showers are expected to move slowly, potentially resulting in significant rainfall in localized areas, with the greatest risk in Jutland.

A cloudburst is defined as 15 millimeters of precipitation within a 30-minute period. This risk warning is the lowest level in DMI’s warning system, advising the public to monitor weather developments in their specific locations. While not a formal warning, it signals the possibility of severe weather. The warning levels progress from category 1 for severe weather to categories for dangerous and very dangerous conditions.

Earlier this week, a category 3 warning, the first since January 2020, was issued for heavy rain, impacting Southern Zealand and Lolland-Falster particularly hard. From Monday to Wednesday morning, numerous measuring stations recorded over 100 millimeters of precipitation. The highest rainfall was recorded in Bjørup near Nykøbing Falster with 165.6 millimeters.
