The chairman of the Danish Ice Hockey Union, Henrik Bach Nielsen, expressed his shock and excitement after the Danish national team qualified for the World Cup semi-final for the first time in history. The team’s unexpected 2-1 victory over Canada in the quarter-final has sent shockwaves through the ice hockey world.
Nielsen, who was already scheduled to attend the annual congress of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) in Stockholm, now finds himself heading to the Swedish capital with the national team. He described the victory as “the biggest international shock” he has witnessed in his long involvement with the sport.
Overwhelmed by the achievement, Nielsen struggled to articulate the significance of the moment for Danish ice hockey. He hopes that this success will provide the sport with “wonderful exposure in the media.”
He also described a euphoric atmosphere at the game, which was held in Boxen and is looking forward to seeing more of the same.
Denmark is now set to face Switzerland in the semi-final on Saturday.
