Thomas Arnoldsen, the Danish national handball team playmaker, is out indefinitely as he begins medication for ADHD. The 23-year-old was diagnosed in the fall of 2023. According to his club, Aalborg Håndbold, he is taking time away from the sport to properly manage the condition with medication.
Arnoldsen initially joined Aalborg Håndbold in the summer of 2023, but was soon sidelined due to physical and mental exhaustion. During the subsequent six months, he underwent examinations and received an ADHD diagnosis. He was provided with tools to manage the condition.
While Arnoldsen improved and returned to playing handball, his symptoms never fully disappeared. This spring, he started ADHD medication, requiring him to step away from training and matches during the initial phase. He was absent from March 8 to the end of April.
Arnoldsen acknowledges that the introduction of medication is ongoing and he is still experiencing symptoms. He views this period as a necessary step toward future progress. Club director Jan Larsen expressed frustration at the situation. He affirmed the club’s support, providing both internal medical resources and external expertise, including performance psychologist Martin Langagergaard.
No specific timeline has been set for Arnoldsen’s return to the handball court. Aalborg Håndbold is currently focused on the Danish league playoffs after being eliminated from the Champions League.
