Danish Foreign Minister Summons US Diplomat Over Greenland Infiltration Concerns

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has summoned a top American diplomat to address concerns about potential attempts to infiltrate Greenland by American citizens. This action follows reports from the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) detailing the activities of three American men and their possible efforts to influence the island.

The Foreign Minister emphasized that any external interference in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, which includes Greenland, is unacceptable. He stated he has requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to arrange a meeting with the American Chargé d’Affaires to discuss the matter.

The US Embassy in Denmark is currently led by Chargé d’Affaires Mark Stroh, as the position of ambassador remains vacant. While Donald Trump nominated Ken Howery as the new ambassador, the nomination awaits the necessary political approvals.

DR reported, citing anonymous sources, that individuals with ties to former US President Donald Trump are allegedly attempting to infiltrate Greenland. The report suggests these efforts are linked to Trump’s past interest in acquiring Greenland for the United States. However, DR could not confirm whether these individuals are acting independently.

The White House has not responded to DR’s inquiry regarding whether the US government directed US citizens to conduct influence operations in Greenland. A representative from the US Embassy in Copenhagen told DR that the US government does not control the actions of private citizens, acknowledging individual Americans may have interests in Greenland.

Summoning representatives from allied nations is uncommon for Denmark. Rasmussen highlighted the close relationship between Denmark and Greenland, emphasizing the trust and collaboration between their respective governments and authorities.
