Danish Foreign Minister summons US diplomat over alleged Greenland infiltration attempts

Denmark has summoned a top US diplomat following reports of potential American infiltration attempts in Greenland. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen announced the meeting with the US chargé d’affaires after the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) reported on the activities of three American men.

The Foreign Ministry has been instructed to summon the US representative to address concerns about possible foreign interference in the internal affairs of the Kingdom of Denmark, which includes Greenland. Rasmussen emphasized that any attempts to influence the Kingdom’s future are unacceptable.

The DR report cited anonymous sources alleging that men with ties to former US President Donald Trump are attempting to infiltrate Greenland. The report noted Greenland has long been an object of interest for Trump, who once considered it as a future part of the USA.

Aaja Chemnitz, a Member of Parliament, stated that such activity is “over the line” and emphasized the need to reduce Greenland’s vulnerabilities to foreign influence. She noted that this is not surprising, given the significant American interest and influence campaigns seen during recent elections in Greenland.

The US Embassy in Copenhagen stated that the US government does not control the actions of private citizens and that individual Americans may have interests in Greenland. The White House has not yet responded to inquiries regarding whether the US government ordered its citizens to carry out influence operations in Greenland.

This is not the first time Denmark has summoned US diplomats. In May, Rasmussen summoned the then-US chargé d’affaires following reports of increased US espionage against Greenland. The Foreign Minister emphasized the close cooperation and dialogue between Denmark and Greenlandic authorities.
