A 36-year-old woman of Moroccan descent, Amal Arab, has been sentenced to four years in prison by the Frederiksberg Court for her involvement with the Islamic State (ISIS) in Syria but will not be deported from Denmark. The court issued a warning regarding deportation but ultimately ruled that she can remain in the country.
The decision was made due to her role as the single mother and primary caregiver for her two children, who are Danish citizens.
Arab will remain in custody for the time being.
Arab and her two children were repatriated from the al-Roj camp in Kurdish-controlled Syria in June 2023, after residing there for five years. Prior to that, from 2014 to 2018, she was a wife and housewife to men involved with ISIS.
Furthermore, she was employed as a nurse at an ISIS hospital for approximately six months.
The conviction stems from her association with ISIS, violating terrorism laws by promoting a terrorist organization and entering a prohibited conflict zone.
Arab acknowledged both charges in court.
