A 53-year-old Danish citizen, suspected of spying for Iran, was handed over to German police on Monday, according to East Jutland Police. The man was arrested in Aarhus on June 26 based on a German arrest warrant.
German authorities suspect the individual of gathering intelligence on Jewish sites and individuals in Berlin. It is alleged that earlier this year, the 53-year-old received instructions from an Iranian intelligence agency to collect information on Jewish locations and specific Jewish people in Berlin.
The suspect appeared in a preliminary hearing in Aarhus on June 26, where he consented to extradition, according to reports. His lawyer declined to comment on the case.
German authorities stated in a press release on July 1 that the 53-year-old will be brought before an investigating judge upon arrival in Germany. The timing of this appearance remains unknown.
The man allegedly spied on three properties in June, potentially to prepare for further intelligence operations in Germany, possibly with the intention of conducting terrorist attacks against Jewish targets.
The case originated from intelligence provided by the German intelligence service, BfV. The Federal Criminal Police BKA has been assigned to lead the police investigation. Reports indicate the 53-year-old allegedly received orders from the Quds Force, responsible for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s activities abroad. Previous reports also indicate the 53-year-old has an Afghan background.
