Danish Chamber of Commerce Criticizes EU-US Trade Agreement

The Danish Chamber of Commerce (Dansk Erhverv) has voiced criticism regarding the recently established trade framework agreement between the EU and the US, which imposes a 15 percent tariff on European goods exported to the United States. Brian Mikkelsen, CEO of the Danish Chamber of Commerce, expressed concern that this agreement would negatively impact Danish companies’ ability to compete in the American market.

The agreement, announced after a meeting between US President Donald Trump and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland, stipulates that the EU will purchase American weapons and energy in substantial amounts. Additionally, the agreement involves European investments totaling $600 billion in the United States, according to President Trump.

Mikkelsen expressed hope for stability in the trade sector but remained cautious about the future, questioning how long it would be before further trade disputes arise. He emphasized the importance of the EU and the Danish government maintaining a proactive stance, remaining open to negotiation, and standing united in the face of potential challenges.

Last year, the United States was Denmark’s largest export market, accounting for DKK 361 billion, or 17.4 percent of Denmark’s total export revenue, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The 15 percent tariff is a reduction from the 30 percent initially threatened by President Trump. The EU had initially aimed for a zero-tariff agreement with the US.

Mikkelsen stated that President Trump has altered the landscape of international trade by imposing significant tariffs on imports and increasing taxes for the average American consumer. He believes this shift makes everyone poorer and hinders Danish companies from showcasing their solutions and goods in the US market.
