Danish Airport Employees Assist Nuuk Airport After Security Suspension

International traffic at Nuuk Airport is set to resume on Thursday after a temporary suspension of security control for international travelers. The suspension, enacted by the Danish Transport Authority on Tuesday, stemmed from concerns that employee training did not fully meet requirements for screening international passengers.

To address the issue, a team of certified security control staff from two Danish airports has arrived in Nuuk. Their presence is intended to facilitate the reopening of international traffic following Wednesday’s closure.

Greenland Airports acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the suspension, stating on Facebook that they “deeply regret this, and we are working intensively to ensure a good experience at our airport.” The suspension had forced international travelers to undergo security checks at Kangerlussuaq or Narsarsuaq airports before departing Greenland.

Work is underway to ensure that Nuuk security staff can resume their full functions soon. Nuuk Airport, a significant infrastructure project, recently underwent expansion, including a new 2200-meter runway. This expansion has enabled direct flights to Nuuk from Copenhagen, Europe, and the USA. The airport received its first direct flight from Denmark in November of last year and its first direct flight from the USA in June. However, the recent suspension led to a flight from New York turning back mid-air over Canada on Tuesday.
