Daniel Wass has been named the new captain of Brøndby, following the departure of Jacob Rasmussen to Red Bull Salzburg in June. The experienced midfielder will wear the captain’s armband in upcoming matches, as announced by the Superliga club.
Wass is part of a five-player captain’s group, which includes Nicolai Vallys, Sean Klaiber, Patrick Pentz, and reserve goalkeeper Thomas Mikkelsen.
Head coach Frederik Birk emphasized Wass’s extensive experience and history with Brøndby IF, highlighting his international experience as qualities making him a natural leader for the club. “That responsibility will lie with Daniel Wass, who is an experienced player with a long history at Brøndby IF, spiced with great international experience, which all in all makes Daniel a natural and strong representative for the club,” said Birk.
In Wass’s absence, Nicolai Vallys or Sean Klaiber will assume the captaincy. Birk also noted the importance of the entire captain’s group to the team’s way of working.
Last year, Wass expressed disappointment at being overlooked for the captaincy by former coach Jesper Sørensen. At the time Wass said, “It’s a club I live for, so of course I would have liked to have been captain. It was hard.”
The 36-year-old midfielder has played 200 first-team games for Brøndby since his debut 18 years ago.
