Copenhagen’s Most Criminal Families Cost Millions Annually

The ten most criminal families in Copenhagen cost the municipality up to DKK 25 million each year. This is according to a calculation by the municipality’s finance department.

Employment and Integration Mayor Jens-Kristian Lütken (V) requested the calculation and wants to implement targeted measures against these families.

Each family cost the municipality an average of DKK 2.5 million in 2023. The expenses were primarily due to public transfers, child placements, and other social measures.

Lütken faces challenges because he is not permitted to access the names of the 36 individuals comprising these families due to privacy regulations. Lütken states that not having access to the names hinders the ability to address the problem effectively and prevent further involvement of children and young people in crime.

Over the past decade, the ten families have accumulated 133 charges and 26 convictions. These convictions include property crimes, such as vandalism and burglary, as well as other penal code violations.

In April, Lütken stated that Copenhagen has a problem with kinship-based crime, following a mapping exercise that identified 605 families with both children and adults involved in criminal activity.
