A recent security survey conducted by the City of Copenhagen for 2025 reveals that residents of the Brønshøj-Husum district experience a higher sense of insecurity compared to other areas of the city, despite the district having lower reported crime rates. More than a quarter of residents in Brønshøj-Husum report feeling unsafe after dark, marking the highest level of unease among Copenhagen’s 12 districts.
The primary sources of insecurity reported by residents include violent crime, offensive behavior or assault, and the presence of rocker and gang activity. These concerns are particularly heightened in public spaces such as stations and bus stops, streets, green areas, parks, and playgrounds.
Interestingly, despite the heightened sense of insecurity, reported cases of Penal Code crimes per 1,000 residents in Brønshøj-Husum were lower than the overall average for Copenhagen in 2024. Furthermore, the number of reported incidents in the district has significantly decreased since 2023. This suggests that the level of concern among residents may be disproportionate to the actual level of criminal activity.
The survey indicates that residents’ anxieties regarding specific incidents, such as bicycle thefts, violence, theft, and burglary, are higher than the actual occurrence rates of these events. For instance, 20 percent of residents expressed concern about bicycle thefts, while only 13 percent had actually experienced it. Similarly, the proportion of residents who have been exposed to certain situations, such as being offered euphoriant drugs, harassment, and vandalism, is lower in Brønshøj-Husum compared to the Copenhagen average.
This trend of heightened anxiety despite lower crime rates is not new to Brønshøj-Husum. The 2023 Security Survey also highlighted the district as having the lowest reported crime rate in Copenhagen, even though it also registered high levels of insecurity that year.
