Copenhagen Considers Zero-Emission Zone in Vesterbro

Copenhagen is considering implementing a zero-emission zone in Inner Vesterbro by 2027, potentially restricting petrol and diesel cars from entering the area. The proposal, put forth by Technical and Environmental Mayor Line Barfod, aims to reduce harmful air particles in the capital.

The initiative has garnered support from Niels E. Bjerrum, the Social Democrats’ political spokesman in Copenhagen, although the party group has yet to formally discuss the matter. A report by COWI, a consulting firm, estimates that the zone could reduce fossil car kilometers by 115 million and save 17,400 tonnes of CO2 annually, with a socio-economic value of DKK 12 million from reduced particle pollution.

However, the proposal has faced criticism, particularly from the motorists’ interest organization, FDM, which cites concerns about traffic consequences and increased detours. COWI’s calculations indicate that the zone could lead to almost 11,000 kilometers of detours daily, as fossil car drivers would be forced to circumvent Vesterbro.

Torben Lund Kudsk, political director at FDM, has expressed concerns about the lack of consideration for the private economic costs to individuals who may have to forgo trips, endure added inconvenience, or replace their vehicles prematurely. The proposal will be discussed at the town hall on Monday.
