Controversy Surrounds Cybernauts’ Activities and Funding

The Cybernauts, a Danish cybersecurity and digital media group, face scrutiny over alleged bullying tactics and the use of public funds. Critics argue that the organization, which presents itself as a source of expert advice and education, is engaged in biased activism.

Allegations center around Anne Hansen, the chairman of the board of Cybernauts, who also runs the Instagram profile “Offense-Cultural Memes.” This profile is accused of publicly shaming individuals, spreading unsubstantiated rumors, and inciting online harassment campaigns, primarily targeting men.

Concerns have been raised about the hypocrisy of Hansen presenting herself as an expert on digital safety while allegedly participating in online bullying. Victims of the “Offense-Cultural Memes” profile, including journalist Frej Kofoed and film director Jonas Risvig, have spoken out about the harassment they experienced.

Further controversy stems from the funding Cybernauts receives. In 2024, the organization secured support for a project titled “Gender War: From TikTok to the Classroom,” aimed at countering division among young people regarding equality and mapping the Danish-language “manosphere.”

This funding originates from the Fundamental Rights Initiative (FRI), co-financed by the EU and part of the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values programme (CERV). The advisory board of FRI includes feminist activist Emma Holten, Susanne Branner Jespersen of LGBT+ Denmark, and Nadeen Aiche, a spokesperson for a pro-Palestinian demonstration.

Critics argue that the composition of FRI’s advisory board suggests a left-wing activist bias, potentially influencing the distribution of funds and undermining the impartiality of Cybernauts’ work. This has led to questions about whether Cybernauts can be considered an unbiased source of expertise in digital education.

The most prominent figure in the media is Maia Kahlke Lorentzen. She garnered attention for a controversial speech celebrating the burning of the Børsen (Stock Exchange) due to issues related to capitalism and Denmark’s colonial past. Another notable figure is Monir Mooghen, known for defending the secrecy of Normstormerne’s gender education material.
