The Conservative party, led by Mona Juul, is setting its sights on securing at least 14 mayoral positions in the upcoming municipal and regional elections scheduled for November 18th. This was announced by Juul during the party’s summer meeting on Wednesday.
“It’s an important election,” Juul stated, emphasizing the party’s current standing. “Right now we have 14 mayoral posts. That’s a really good number, and I’m aiming for that number not to get smaller after the election.“
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Juul expressed the party’s commitment to regaining lost ground, particularly in Frederiksberg Municipality, where the Conservatives lost power after 112 years. “We will do everything we can to get Frederiksberg back, there’s no secret about that, but it’s not an easy task,” she admitted.
Juul refrained from setting specific targets for individual municipalities or committing to retaining all existing mayoral posts. “We shouldn’t run around and haggle about it. I don’t want to talk expectations and ambitions far below the floorboards. We are going for all the mayoral posts that are available,” she explained. “So, it may be that there are some replacements, but it is 14 mayoral posts that we are aiming for.“
Reflecting on the 2021 elections, where the Conservatives experienced significant gains under the leadership of Søren Pape Poulsen, Juul acknowledged that replicating that level of success nationally may be difficult. “It was an extraordinarily good election” for the Conservatives in 2021, she said, noting the increase from 8.8 percent of the votes in 2017 to 15.2 percent in 2021. Despite this, she remains optimistic about the party’s ability to maintain its current number of mayoral posts.
In the 2021 election, the Conservatives secured an absolute majority in the municipalities of Gentofte, Høje-Taastrup, Lyngby-Taarbæk, and Vallensbæk.
