Several Danish cities experienced significant flooding Tuesday afternoon due to intense cloudbursts. The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) reported heavy rainfall in Zealand cities including Holbæk and Gundsømagle.
Køge and Nakskov, located further south, were also severely affected, with reports of two double cloudbursts in each city. In Tessebølle, south of Køge, the DMI measuring station recorded 34.6 millimeters of rain in just 30 minutes.
According to the DMI, a cloudburst is defined as precipitation exceeding 15 millimeters within a 30-minute period. Cloudbursts have also been reported over the Limfjord.
Earlier Tuesday, DMI issued two warnings for heavy rain and potential local cloudbursts across large portions of Denmark. Both warnings were categorized as “violent weather” (category 1), urging residents to be mindful of how the weather might impact their surroundings and outdoor activities.
The initial warning was in effect from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, with a subsequent warning issued from 6 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
